The problem

Product data lives in folders, spreadsheets and emails. Marketing, sales, engineering and logistics lose huge amounts of time finding it and keeping it up to date.

02 / 07

What I did

I designed a Product Information Management system built to stay simple: products, their families and attributes, publishing channels, imports and exports, in one shared organisation.

AI features help manage and make use of product data.

03 / 07

How it's built

The backend is C# / .NET on Azure services, in a service-oriented architecture. The front end is Next.js and React.

SignalR brings real-time updates to the interface.

  1. Imports
  2. .NET services on Azure
  3. Next.js interface
  4. Channels and exports

Challenges

  1. 01

A data model each customer shapes

Families, attributes and channels are defined by each organisation. The challenge: keeping the interface clear when the structure changes from one customer to the next, with drag and drop, a rich text editor (TipTap) and filters kept in the URL.

  2. 02

Real time for the whole team

With SignalR, a change shows up instantly for everyone working on the same catalogue, without reloading.

  3. 03

    Separate, secured workspaces

Auth0 authentication and workspaces separated by organisation: each team only sees its own data. Every route of the .NET API, real time included, is described and replayed in Bruno collections.

Results

JABS is preparing its launch: the website is live, and its waiting list is open.

06 / 07

What I learned

A PIM stands or falls on its data model. The hard part is not displaying a product, but letting each customer define their own families and attributes without the interface turning into an endless form.
